Speed of delivery, bandwidth usage and device performance are influenced by the size of the content within the layouts for playback.

As such we have outlined a few file size recommendations below to help you get the best performance from your signage.

Here's an example of why image sizing is so important:

Let's imagine you've taken a photo and want to show that on your signage. IMG_910.JPG is 2.14MB in file size and is 3456 x 2304 pixel dimensions.

You upload this to your account and then want to be place it in a zone of 590px by 380px dimension - the image is nearly six times the size of the zone

Any device this gets published to needs to load 2.14mb of image data into the zone. It then has to resize it to almost a sixth of its size and then animate that into the zone and play it for the specified time based on your playlist settings...

... this will put excessive load on the processor and become unnecessarily overworked. Then imagine you add 10's or 100's of images of the same spec, the device is being put under excessive processing strain which can be avoided. Some devices can handle this excess strain but others can't so it's always best to feed them the content they can handle properly.

Best practice for images is to:

  • Make the image pixel dimensions no larger than the zone you will be placing it in

  • Ensure the pixel dimensions do not exceed the screen / device resolution

  • Design and render as 72 dpi resolution

  • If as a .jpg file, try rendering at 85% max quality this will give the same visible quality on your screen but reduce the file size

Movies:

File size will depend on length of video however we would recommend uploading video as an .mp4 as below:

  • Under 4K resolution - recommend h.264, mp4, 30fps

  • 4K and above resolution - recommend h.265, mp4, 30fps

There is a default maximum upload file size is 133mb, however this can be increased to 5GB per file upon request (no charge) - if you need this function, please contact us.
