Webhook/HTTP Send Events with External Communications

Webhook/HTTP send events, lets your players send GET and POST requests to any URL on your local network or out on the wider internet.

Written by Drew Harding

The External Communications plugin is required to use this feature - if it's not yet activated on your account, please get in touch with your supplier to have it enabled.

Using the Webhook/HTTP Send Event turns your players into active participants in your tech ecosystem: trigger smart lighting or HVAC when content changes, talk to local hardware like door controllers and sensors, or kick off automations in tools like Zapier, Make and n8n to connect your signage to thousands of downstream apps.

This feature is supported across all platforms with no device restrictions.

Setup an External Communications config.

  • Give it a name

  • From the dropdown choose HTTP / Webhook

  • Save changes

  • and then click Commands

  • Set a label name

  • Choose GET/POST depending on what the endpoint requires

  • Enter the URL you want to send to. It can include the attributes. The attributes will be automatically filled in in the advanced tab. So if they disappear from the url that is to be expected.

  • Look at the advanced tab to see the attributes that can be sent. These are any HTTP headers you could send authorisation headers or just standard get attributes.

  • Save changes

Configure the actions in your layout.

  • In your layout, you need to configure the commands via 'Send External Communication Command'. This is possible any send action such as content trigger, touch interaction or other external comms receive command (i.e. presence sensor > person detected > send ext comms command).

  • Select the Webhook setup you created.

  • Select the command you created and save.

  • Save the layout and assign to channel and publish to your device.
